Why Mobile Filmmaking for Dogs?

Mobile filmmaking has come a long way in recent years, and with advances in smartphone technology, it’s now possible to shoot high-quality, cinematic video without additional equipment. Filming with your smartphone means you have a lightweight, easy-to-use camera at your fingertips whenever you and your dog are out and about. No more missing spontaneous moments! Plus, learning how to film your dog with intention means fewer clips taking up space on your phone—and more memories that capture your dog’s unique personality.

Step 1: Set Up Your Smartphone for Success

Before you start filming, make sure your phone’s camera is optimized. Adjusting a few key settings will help you capture sharper, more cinematic footage. Here are some tips to get started:

Enable 4K Resolution: If your smartphone supports it, shoot in 4K resolution. This setting offers greater detail and gives you flexibility in post-production for cropping or zooming. Keep in mind, it does take up more storage space on your phone than clips shot in 1080p, so if you're low on space, transfer & back up your clips to an external storage device, then delete from your phone. (Backing up your video is also highly recommended to safeguard your footage for the long term.)

Use the Grid Feature: Turning on the grid lines will help you align your shot for balanced composition, making it easier to keep your dog in the frame while filming.

Lock the White Balance and Adjust Focus: Toggle your "Lock White Balance" button to ON in your video settings and when ready to film, in video mode, tap your subject on the screen to set the focus or keep your subject large within the frame to help your auto-focus stay trained on them.

Want more detailed guidance? The FILM YOUR DOG Course covers essential universal smartphone camera settings applicable to both iOS and Android, breaking down exactly what you need to do to get great results every time.

Step 2: Think Like a Filmmaker with Composition

Cinematic videos are all about composition. Instead of just pointing your camera and pressing “record,” take a moment to set up each shot with intention. Here’s how:

Frame with the Rule of Thirds: Divide the frame into thirds using your grid lines, and try placing your dog along the lines or at their intersections to create a more engaging, balanced shot. This technique is especially effective when filming your pet in action, as it allows space for movement.

Vary Your Angles: Experiment with different angles to add depth to your video. Try getting down to your dog’s eye level for an immersive perspective, or shoot from above and off to the side for a unique view of their surroundings. Switching angles keeps your footage interesting and makes each moment feel intentional.

Capture the Environment: Don’t just focus on your dog; include elements of the background to provide context. This is particularly powerful when filming your dog outdoors, as it emphasizes the scene and adds a cinematic touch.

My course dives deep into composition techniques and provides you with a Shot List Inspiration Guide so you’ll never run out of creative ideas.

Step 3: Use Cinematic Movements

Cinematic movements like panning and tracking make your footage more dynamic and polished. Here are a couple of beginner-friendly moves:

Slow Panning: Gently move your camera horizontally to follow your dog as they walk or play. This adds motion to your video and makes your viewer feel like they’re part of the scene.

Tracking Shots: Walk alongside or behind your dog to capture them in motion. Keep your movements smooth to maintain a steady shot, or invest in a low-cost stabilizer or mobile gimbal for extra smoothness.

In FILM YOUR DOG - Smartphone Method, I cover a range of cinematic movements you can learn to master more filmic techniques.

Step 4: Add the Finishing Touches with Editing

Finally, editing can make a big difference in how your footage looks and feels. With the right software and a little creativity, you can enhance colors, add music, and trim clips to create a mini-stories featuring your pup. In my course, I guide you through editing using free, user-friendly software so you can make your videos look polished without spending any extra on expensive tools.
